I now think that Scotland can be independent far sooner than I thought possible.

I’ve just read a report in the Sunday Scotsman newspaper, May 18, 2008, about an incident the previous Wednesday at a soccer match in Manchester.

CCTV images showed lone policeman Mick Regan being taunted by a mob of Rangers fans before he was knocked to the ground and kicked and punched in a flurry of blows.

The footage sent waves of shock and revulsion around the world and brought shame on Scotland.

The violence broke out among the 100,000 Rangers fans who had descended on Manchester for the match between the Glasgow team Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg from Russia.

Scotland reached its zenith during the “enlightenment.” The country earned the respect of the rest of the world for it’s crucial contributions to science, philosophy, literature, education, medicine, commerce and politics.

The country Scotland, if one can still call it a country, has been in steady decline that has accelerated over the past 60 years or so.
The bagpipes, haggis and whiskey caricature has been replaced by a far more serious image of an uncontrollable rabble characterized by a collapsed educational system, a collapsed health care system, rising crime, drug use and violence that is off the scale…

Devolution is a sham. It’s a sop to the activists who believe Scotland can stand on it’s own two feet. The reality is Scotland is descending into something that bears no resemblance to it’s former self.

The informed minority knows that if a referendum were held tomorrow the majority would vote NO to independence and that is why the politicos have been delaying and delaying facing the reality.

The reality is, Scotland is now a region of dependence, dependence on the welfare state.

The same informed minority knows that a referendum will change nothing, even if in the unlikely event the vote was YES for independence.

The basic problem is, nobody knows what to do with Scotland.

And all this stuff about Scottish sons of freedom dying in foreign wars while the home hearths grow cold is sentimental mush. Scotland’s days of real glory are long gone.

Last may you wrote a blog “Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow” in which you said that thev tide had turned., empires were of the past and the future belonged to the nation states.

I agreed with every word you wrote then. I am just amazed at how fast the unionist position is crumbling. I think Scotland could now be independent with a few years. Nobody can see the future but a yes vote in a referendum in 2010/2011 looks like a real possiblity now. So it may not be for much longer that the Scottish soldier fights other peoples wars.
